Being a hugely talented Graphic Designer may not be enough to guarantee a successful business, if those skills are not matched by at least competent business skills.

Running any type of business requires a broad range of skills and a Graphic Design business is no different. The greatest Graphic Designer is the world should have an advantage when running their own company, but there are no guarantees that they will be able to run a successful enterprise.

A Graphic Designer needs more than their design skills to operate effectively in the commercial world. They need also to be able to grasp the basics of running a business and ensuring that they do not make basic mistakes which could jeopardize their chances of commercial success.

The following are some basic tips that a Graphic Designer should give some consideration to, whether they are already an established business or are hoping to set up on their own.

Take Advice From Others

No business person can hope to know everything and running a successful business requires a broad range of skills. A Graphic Designer should take care to know their own limitations and always seek outside help in aspects of their business where their skills are not so strong.

This doesn't just apply to taking the advice of specialist experts, such as lawyers, but also from others among family and friends for more general advice and opinions.

Set Sensible Budgets

When it comes to setting budgets, there can be temptations to both spend too little and more than necessary. A Graphic Designer should pay careful consideration to what they really need to spend money on.

For example there may be a desire to purchase the most powerful Apple Mac workstation, but is that power really necessary for general 2D work? However, upgrading from an older machine could speed up work flow and so lead to real world savings over a period of time.

Present a Solid Brand

Having a uniform public face is sound advice for any business that wishes to be taken seriously, but this is an essential point for a Graphic Designer. It is an opportunity to showcase talents and skills and so time and effort should be carefully invested in producing a logo and brand identity.

Keep Full Accounts

Dealing with books and accounts are an aspect of commerce that many business people wish they could forget about, however, they are an essential discipline. There are many online and offline software applications that can help to keep track of all incomings and outgoings.

It is also an aspect of running a business where it may make commercial sense to employ a specialist, ie an accountant, to ensure that nothing important is overlooked.

Plan Ahead

It is impossible to see into the future and foresee every possible result of business decisions, however it is possible to consider a range of possible outcomes of actions and prepare accordingly.

Rather than just going with the flow, Graphic Designers should give consideration to what they want to achieve over a specific period and look at what actions they need to take to achieve their targets. Setting milestones along the way can assist in ensuring that plans remain on track.

Talented Graphic Designers don't automatically make effective business people, but if they give some thought to basic skills, they can ensure they don't make basic mistakes that could jeopardize the success of their enterprise.
