Ian Pullen is a Graphic Designer with some 15 years of experience in the industry. His first foot on the ladder, after completing 2 years studying Graphic Design, was as a lowly Paste-Up Artist for a regional newspaper publisher, back in the days before Quark xPress and Indesign changed the industry.

Fortunately he survived regular scalpel injuries and moved from paste-up to DTP. His introduction to Quark was a revelation and opened up new possibilities as he learned everything that he could about the software. This desire to make the most of design software went on to encompass the other big name applications, including Photoshop and Illustrator, and a selection of Open Source applications, such as Scribus and Gimp.

Broad Graphic Design Experience

As well as working in newspaper publishing, he has also worked in advertising and magazine and book publishing. His experiences have given Ian a broad skills base and strong understanding of the technical aspects of print production, ensuring that he can create effective communications that are press ready.

This broad knowledge helped him to take more senior positions and he has twice be given the opportunity to set up and establish new design studios, one for a magazine publisher and another for a Marketing agency.

Ian prides himself on his ability to communicate effectively in writing and has had several positions that required him to proof read copy before printing.

Freelance Print and Web Designer

Now based in rural Spain with his wife Kate (Suite101's Audiobook Feature Writer) and a menagerie of dogs and cats, Ian operates as a freelance designer producing print materials for a range of companies, from small one man operations through to large corporates. Together, Kate and Ian run a few directory websites, including freeneedle.com, reallygoodpages.com, makeforbusiness.com, makeforbaby.com and makeforchristmas.com. He also designs for the web and develops bespoke web applications, primarily for smaller businesses.
